Herasicamina

el-Maharraqa (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Herasicamina marks the end of the road along the Nile, the last place on the map still under Roman rule. It lay in Nubia south of Syene, today's Aswan, at el-Maharraqa in Egypt, and a treaty concluded on Samos in 21 BC between Rome and the kingdom of Meroë fixed Egypt's southern frontier here. The Tabula gives it the usual pair of towers, and Roman troops were indeed stationed there. The Roman writer Pliny, describing Nero's expedition of AD 61, puts it fifty-four miles from Syene, while the map counts forty-eight. A temple to Isis and Serapis stood there, built in Roman times but never finished.
