City
Herichonte
Jericho
Herichonte is Jericho, the old oasis city close to the Jordan. Ancient writers, among them the Greek geographer Strabo and the Roman historian Tacitus, praised its fertile land, rich in palms, roses and balsam shrubs. A Canaanite city said to have been destroyed by Joshua, it was inhabited again by King David's time and fortified from the age of the Maccabees onwards. In Strabo's day many Arabs and Egyptians lived there, and in Roman times several forts guarded it. It stood on the army road to Jerusalem, yet the map shows no stretch linking the two, although the mapmaker quite possibly meant to connect them.
