Arcelais
Arcelais is Archelais, a large village founded by Archelaus, son of Herod the Great, whose name it bears. It lay in a level country rich in palms on the road from Jericho to Scythopolis, and its palm groves were famous. The exact site is uncertain: candidates are ruins in a side valley of the Wadi Fara, or places closer to Jericho. The map counts twelve Roman miles from Jericho and twelve more to Coabis, though the first figure seems too small, perhaps a slip for twenty-two.
