Arcade

Aphráti, Αφράτι

Arcade is Arkades, an inland city in the heart of Crete, near today's Afrati. In 221 BC, in the war between Lyttos and Knossos, it broke with its old ally Knossos and went over to Lyttos. In 193 BC it signed a treaty recognising the sanctuary of Dionysus at Teos in Ionia as a place of asylum, renewed in 160. Destroyed in war and later rebuilt, it lived on into Christian times as a bishop's seat. The Ravenna list writes Arpade.
