Aratu

(between Paraetonium and Catabathmus) (Barrington)d

Aratu lay on the coast road that ran through the west of Egypt towards Paraetonium, marked on the map by a name alone. It is twenty-eight Roman miles from Catabathmo and twenty-six from Nesus. The Ravenna list spells it Araton and Aradum and places it by the sea, and the Roman register of routes seems to call the same stop Aristeu. The exact spot is unknown; older research looked for it west of the Ischaila rocks.
