Arae Philenorum

Graret Gser et-Trab, Cyrenaica (Libya)

Arae Philaenorum, the altars of the Philaeni, appears here as a road station, and below it the map also draws two altars. Pliny says the original altars were mere mounds of sand over the brothers who had themselves buried alive, and by Strabo's time they had vanished. Ptolemy, like the map, knows a village of that name and puts the altars just south of it. The Roman register of routes calls the stop Banadedari, but both sources give twenty-five Roman miles, about thirty-seven kilometres, to Anabucis, so it is probably the same place. The site lies at Graret Gser et-Trab in Libya.
