Aquis Neri

Néris-les-Bains

Aquis Neri is Néris-les-Bains, south of Montluçon, whose hot springs made the fortune of a village of the Bituriges Cubi from the time of Augustus. The villagers called themselves Neriomagienses, as an inscription found in 1776 shows, so the place was also known as Neriomagus. The village grew into a town, with two bath complexes, two aqueducts and a theatre, and it lay where roads to Clermont, Poitiers and Bourges met. Legionary tiles were found here too. Decline came in the fourth century.
