Aquilonia

Lacedonia

Listen to the story

Aquilonia, now Lacedonia, a town of the Hirpini on the Via Appia, saw one of Rome's decisive victories over the Samnites in 293 BC, and the historian Livy describes the Samnite losses in detail. After Cannae Hannibal occupied it. Later a freedman of the town recorded in an inscription that he had paved its square. Confusingly, in 1862 a village some fifteen kilometres away was renamed Aquilonia by mistake, and it still bears that name.
