Apta Iulia

Apt

Apta Iulia is Apt on the Calavon, the chief town of the Vulgientes. The Romans destroyed it around 125 BC, and Caesar refounded it under his own family name, Iulia, as a colony with Latin rights, lying on the road from Milan to Arles. Inscriptions name its magistrates, a priest of Augustus and a dependent rural district, and the Gallo-Roman bishop Sidonius Apollinaris mentions it in a letter. In the sixth century most of its people left the town to seek refuge on the neighbouring heights.
