Apollonia

Pojan

Apollonia is drawn without a town symbol, while nearby Aulon has one, and that probably reflects late antiquity, when Apollonia's harbour silted up and Aulon, today Vlorë, took its place. Yet this was once a great city, at Pojan in Albania: founded by Greeks from Corcyra early in the sixth century BC, a starting point of the Via Egnatia, Caesar's base in the civil war, and the place where the young Octavian studied in 45 BC. Its city wall, council house, theatre, odeon and fountain house have been excavated. The name honours Apollo, and the map knows another Apollonia.
