Anxano

Lanciano

Listen to the story

Lanciano, in the hills above the Adriatic coast of the Abruzzo, was the Roman Anxanum, which the map writes Anxano, a town of the Frentani; the Roman writer Pliny calls its people the Anxani, surnamed Frentani. It was a market town and later a municipium, and men from here appear in a list of soldiers found in Rome. A Roman bridge over the stream Feltrino dates from the time of Diocletian. A second Anxanum appears further down this coast.
