Anticirra

Kastro tou Stenou

Listen to the story

Anticirra is Anticyra in Phocis, on a bay of the Gulf of Corinth near the modern town of Antikyra in Greece, famous in antiquity for hellebore, taken there as a cure for madness; the Roman poet Horace jokes that misers should be sent to Anticyra. Philip the Second of Macedon destroyed it in 346 BC, and Romans and Macedonians later fought over it again and again. The map's spelling may blend Anticyra with Cirrha, the port of Delphi, which seems to have dropped out just before it.
