Antiochiae

bei Kuyucak

Antiochiae stood on the Maeander, where the Morsynus flows into it, near Kuyucak in Turkey. Pliny says it rose on the site of the older towns of Symmaethos and Cranaos; its founding is credited to Antiochus the First, who according to Stephanus of Byzantium built it for his mother after a dream. Strabo describes a middling city with a bridge over the river, rich land on both banks, famous figs and frequent earthquakes. In 189 BC the Roman commander Manlius Vulso camped here on his campaign against the Galatians, and bishops are attested from 325.
