Road station

Antoniopolis

? Çerkeş

Antoniopolis, probably today's Çerkeş, was a station on the main road from Nicomedia to Gangra. Its name may honour Caracalla, who reigned as Marcus Aurelius Antoninus from 211 to 217; others think of Antinous, the youth loved by Hadrian and worshipped after his death in 130, whose home town Claudiopolis lay on this same road. Little survives: travellers of the 19th century saw two Roman guard houses to the west, the remains of an amphitheatre to the east, and inscribed stones in the town.
