Antunnaco

Andernach

Antvnnaco is Antunnacum, today Andernach on the Rhine in Germany, where long-distance roads met the road along the river. Beside the fort a village grew up with a harbour, where millstones and building stone from the quarries around Mayen were loaded onto ships. In late antiquity the village was ringed by a wall with round towers, still standing in places five metres high; Julian renewed it, and in the fifth century a small unit was still stationed here. On the map the distance figure is split, seven after the name and two above it, so as not to run into the river.
