Antipego
Tobruk (Barrington) · bei Tobruk (Miller)
Antipego is Antipyrgos, now Tobruk in Libya, and its Greek name, 'opposite the tower', described the spot: a summer anchorage on the coast of Marmarica, sheltered behind an island and facing a tower on the mainland. There was a sanctuary of Ammon here, and later a bishop's seat and a garrison; only a few ancient walls survive. The map counts twenty-two Roman miles, about thirty-three kilometres, from Meciris. In the Ravenna list the name became Antipegoni, the extra letters apparently born from the map's figure three.
