Mandis
Gasr el-Carmusa (Barrington)
Mandis lies on a long road through Cyrenaica, thirty-six Roman miles from Agabis and thirty-six again from Paliuris. The geographer Ptolemy perhaps means the same place by the village of Maranthis. It is placed at Gasr el-Carmusa in Libya, although older research equated it with Darnis, the town on the river at Derna. A small slip in the drawing: the upward kink that marks the start of the next stretch was made too early. Some older copies read Madis or Matidis.
