Apollonia
Marsa Susa
Apollonia is just a name on the map, and the road from Cyrene ends there, with no stretch leading on. The geographer Ptolemy calls it the port of the Cyreneans, and at first that was its whole importance: the people of Cyrene kept their warehouses here. Named after the god Apollo, it later became a city in its own right, which the Roman writer Pliny counts among the five cities of the Pentapolis; late antique writers call it Sozousa. At Marsa Susa in Libya its majestic ruins lie tumbled together.
