Appiaris

Ryahovo

Appiaris, Appiaria in the Roman register of routes, is Ryahovo on the Danube, between Ruse and Silistra. An inscription records the camp of a cavalry regiment, the Ala Atectorigiana, and tiles of the Eleventh Legion have been found there. A bishop of Appiaria, Lupicianus, appears in a life of John Chrysostom, and the fortress is last mentioned in 587 by Byzantine historians. The map gives thirteen miles on to Trasmarisca, where the register's sixteen is the right figure.
