Appollonia

Sozopol

Appollonia, today's Sozopol on the Black Sea coast, was once a great city, yet the map gives it no picture: its daughter town Ancialis has one, its rival Mesembria none. The scribe even doubled the p. Colonists from Miletus founded it, led, it is said, by the philosopher Anaximander. Its sanctuary of Apollo stood on a small island; Lucullus carried off the god's colossal statue, a work of Calamis, and set it up on the Capitol in Rome. Ovid calls it the city of Apollo. In Christian times it became Sozopolis.
