Road station
Appollonia
im S des Sees Bolbe · Volvi beim heutigen Nea Apollonia
On the map Appollonia is a plain station on the Via Egnatia, its name written with a doubled p, as so often for towns of this name, perhaps by a copyist who no longer knew that it meant Apollo's city. It lay south of Lake Bolbe, at today's Nea Apollonia, probably settled from the Chalcidice. It supplied a squadron of cavalry to Alexander's army, in 167 BC Aemilius Paullus and King Perseus negotiated here, and the apostle Paul passed through on his way to Thessalonica. It remained a bishop's seat until the 8th century.
