Amphipoli

Neochori

Amphipoli is Amphipolis, founded by the Athenian Hagnon in 437 BC at a place called Nine Roads, on a hill almost ringed by the Strymon above its mouth. It held the bridge on the road from west to east, later the Via Egnatia, and the way to the mines of Mount Pangaion and to timber and pitch. Athens lost it to Sparta in 424, Philip of Macedon took it in 357, and Rome made it the capital of the first Macedonian district. From the 3rd century AD raids wore it down, and the map gives this once great city no picture.
