Ampalaontes

Gasr el-Arid (Barrington)

Ampalaontes, a name found only on this map, was once compared with Ampelos, a coastal town of Cyrenaica with an upper and a lower town, but the map enters it further west, west of Berenice. Perhaps it rather echoes the Ampeliotai, a Libyan tribe said to have dedicated a stalk of silphium at Delphi. The station lay twenty-three Roman miles from Zau Taberna and fifteen from Bernicide, and is placed at Gasr el-Arid in Libya.
