Hic Lacus Tritonum

Listen to the story

Hic Lacus Tritonum, 'here is the lake of Triton', is a note set inland in Cyrenaica, and it is one of three places where the Tabula shows this lake under different names. That hardly surprises, for ancient writers could not agree where it lay: the Greek geographer Strabo put a Tritonis lake beside Berenike, while later authors moved it deep into the interior. Legend made it the birthplace of Athena, and the Roman writer Mela tells of local contests of maidens held on her birthday. Scholars even wonder whether this line is a copyist's addition.
