In his locis scorpiones nascuntur

Listen to the story

In his locis scorpiones nascuntur, 'in these places scorpions are born', is not a town but a written note set into the map's India. It probably echoes Megasthenes, a Greek who wrote about India, and the writer Aelian, who both told of gigantic scorpions, while the geographer Ptolemy names a 'scorpion-bearing land' in southern Areia. If so, the note may go back to an early Hellenistic version of the map. Long captions like this mark the edges of the known world, and together with a matching note about elephants it reappears on the Beatus map of Saint-Sever, drawn in the eleventh century.
