In his locis elephanti nascuntur

Listen to the story

In his locis elephanti nascuntur, 'in these places elephants are born', is a short line of text set beneath a mountain range named Mons Lymodus, at the south-eastern edge of the known world in India. It probably goes back to the Greek writer Megasthenes, who described the land of the Gangarides in eastern India as full of great elephants, and may therefore belong to an early Hellenistic version of the map. A twin note says that scorpions are born here. Both reappear on the Beatus world map of Saint-Sever from the eleventh century, and a world map of 1320 still marks India with 'here elephants are born'.
