Liburnia

(area of Flanaticus Sinus and middle Dalmatia, including Iader area) (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Liburnia, the land of the Liburnian people, covered the Adriatic coast of Croatia around Zadar, together with its offshore islands. The map splits the Roman province of Dalmatia into a northern and a southern district, and Liburnia is the northern one, reaching from the river Arsia almost to Tragurium, with three towns: Senia, Iader and Scardona. Its lettering hides a small puzzle. No stop follows the final A, and the D that comes next already begins Dalmatia, so readers must work out for themselves where one name ends and the other begins.
