Listen to the story
Macedonia, the homeland of Philip the Second and Alexander the Great, became a Roman province after a revolt was crushed around 148 BC. It reached from the Adriatic at Apollonia to the river Nestos, and its governor sat at Thessalonike on the Via Egnatia. The Tabula spreads the name across a wide stretch of the southern Balkans and shows the province still in one piece. That is a small clue to the map's age: a list of provinces from about 297 still knows a single Macedonia, but in the late fourth century it was split in two, and a register of 385 already names both parts.
