Media Maior means Greater Media, the heartland of the ancient Medes in what is now Iran, set apart from a smaller Media to its side. The region's name is lettered in black rather than the red usually kept for lands and peoples. Some Roman-era lists of places use the same name, while one calls the region Upper Media instead.
