Media provincia

Listen to the story

Media Provincia, literally 'the middle province', is written in red across the Alpine lands of Raetia, the Roman province stretching over parts of today's Switzerland, southern Germany and Austria. Scholars disagree about what the words mean. One view holds that the copyist simply miswrote Retia, and notes that the map, as so often, makes no distinction between the two halves into which Raetia was later divided. The other sees an unofficial name used by local people, since no province of this name is attested, and places it in the upper valley of the Adige. Curiously, the same words appear a second time elsewhere on the map, in larger black letters.
