Region
Medio Minor
Listen to the story
Written in red across the eastern edge of the map, Medio Minor is Lesser Media, a region rather than a town. It matches Atropatene, the north-western part of ancient Media, set against Greater Media to the south-east. Its name came from Atropates, a governor under the Persian king Darius the Third, who received this land when Alexander's empire was divided; his descendants still ruled it as kings in Roman imperial times. The region reached from the river Araxes to Lake Urmia, and the name lives on in Azerbaijan, the Iranian province. The map places it too far east.
