Media Provincia

Listen to the story

Media Provincia, meaning “the middle province”, is spread in large letters across a wide stretch of the map. It stands for Savia, one of the provinces into which Pannonia was divided under Diocletian. Savia reached along the river Sava, and its capital was Siscia, now Sisak in Croatia. Oddly, the same name already appears once before, smaller and in red. This time the second word breaks off unfinished, although there seems to have been room to complete it. A list of places compiled in Ravenna wrongly gave the title of middle province to Valeria.
