Ad Praetorium

Suvaja near Bosanska Dubica (Bosnia)

Listen to the story

Near the village of Suvaja, by Bosanska Dubica in Bosnia, lay Ad Praetorium, 'at the praetorium', a lodging for officials on state business. The map draws a small walled farmstead here, so close to a river that its name had to go above the water. Its wall is battlemented in one stretch and plain in the next, so oddly that scholars were tempted to call it the copyist's fantasy. Then the same mix turned up on a Roman mosaic from Oderzo, where a woman scatters feed for her poultry. The distance to Siscia is missing; about thirty miles seem to have dropped out.
