Appii Foro

Borgo Faiti [Pleiades]

Listen to the story

The map marks Forum Appii, Appius' market, with a drawing alone: the courtyard building it uses for spas, with no name beside it. Appius Claudius founded the town when he built his road, the Via Appia, and a milestone of the emperor Nerva found here counts forty-three miles from Rome. This is where the Pontine Marshes began, and a canal ran beside the road towards Terracina. The Roman poet Horace found the place crammed with boatmen and grasping innkeepers. It lies near Borgo Faiti.
