Aquae Populaniae

Bagno del Re (Monterotondo Marittimo) [5] · Thermen von Caldana (Campiglia Marittima) [6]

Listen to the story

Aquae Populaniae, the waters of Populonia, lay among the hot springs of southern Tuscany, probably at the Bagno del Re near Monterotondo Marittimo, a king's bath already recorded in the year 799. Excavations between 2000 and 2003 uncovered an Etruscan and Roman bath complex in use from the third century BC into late antiquity. The map gives it the sign of a bathing place, a small courtyard building, and its two distance figures cannot both be right: seven miles on one side, thirty-three on the other.
