Campania stretches across the map with one letter lost: the m is missing, though a gap remains where it should stand. The name probably comes from Capua, the region's leading city, or from campus, the Latin word for a plain. On the Tabula it covers far more than the classical region, taking in Latium and Samnium with Beneventum as well, just as in late Roman times, when a governor around 368 ruled Campania together with Samnium. The Roman writer Pliny called it felix Campania, blessed Campania, and its volcanic soil was said to give three or even four harvests a year.
