Norico

Listen to the story

Norico, the Roman province of Noricum in the eastern Alps, is lettered in red across the land, yet something unusual happens here: black lettering from a nearby place name runs over its R and I, a clash rarely seen on the map. The province is also placed much too far east. Nor does the map show its division under the emperor Diocletian into Riverside Noricum along the Danube, with Iuvavum and Ovilava, and Inland Noricum, the mountain country around Virunum and Celeia. The geographer Ptolemy names the province repeatedly.
