Pannonia Superior

Listen to the story

Pannonia Superior, Upper Pannonia, was created when the emperor Trajan split the province of Pannonia in two, an upper and a lower half. Along the Danube it held the fortresses of Vindobona, today Vienna, Carnuntum and Brigetio, at first reaching only as far as the mouth of the Raab, while inland lay the towns of Sabaria and Scarabantia. Diocletian later carved the land into four parts and renamed the halves first and second Pannonia, and he set apart a military district called Valeria in honour of his daughter. The map ignores these later divisions and keeps the older name, the same one the geographer Ptolemy used.
