Mardiane
Mardiane is most likely a slip of the pen for Margiana, the fertile land watered by the Murghab river around the oasis of Merv, in what is now Turkmenistan, though it may instead echo a people called the Mardi. A list of places compiled in Ravenna calls it a province of Hyrcania, which fits, since Margiana was once counted as part of that land. The Avesta, the ancient Persian scripture, praised it among the most beautiful countries, and the Roman writer Pliny reports that after the defeat at Carrhae in 53 BC the Parthian king Orodes deported ten thousand Roman prisoners there.
