Luccania
Listen to the story
Lucania, the land of the Lucanians in southern Italy, roughly today's Basilicata, is lettered in an unusual way. The place for each letter was first marked in red with a stroke or a small blob, and the letters were then written above in black. The first C and the first A were only sketched in, and the red was never removed. The region's outline partly follows the Greek geographer Strabo, who placed it between the Tyrrhenian and Sicilian coasts, although his border river Laos is missing. The Roman writer Pliny recalls that Italians first saw elephants here during the war with Pyrrhus and called them Lucanian oxen.
