Heraclea

Policoro

Listen to the story

Two great bronze tablets found here record in Greek how the sacred land of the town was leased out around the turn of the fourth century BC, an important source for how its fields were farmed. Heraclea, named after the hero Heracles, lay at Policoro between the rivers Agri and Sinni and was founded by Tarentum and Thurii in 433 BC. Near it in 280 BC King Pyrrhus, with his elephants, won the first of his costly victories over Rome.
