Hiereo

? 3 km südl. v. Karaevli

Hiereo is a slip for Heraion, the Wall of Hera on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara; a Christian copyist perhaps heard the Greek word for holy in it. Samian colonists founded it around 600 BC, and in 352 BC its walls, held by the Thracian king Kersobleptes, fell to Philip of Macedon after a siege. It lived on more modestly under Rome. The map's order of stations misleads: in truth it lay west of Perinthus, probably at a site south of Karaevli, where pottery from Hellenistic to early Byzantine times has been found.
