Hostilia

Ostiglia (Italy), river port on the Po

Listen to the story

Hostilia, now Ostiglia, was a river port on the Po, and the map marks it as the place where travellers leave the road: beside a line running on to Ravenna it writes from Hostilia along the Po, meaning by boat. Even the road there is spelled out in words, from Verona to Hostilia, thirty-three miles. The Roman writer Pliny tells that people here loaded their beehives onto boats and moved them upriver at night, so that the bees found fresh flowers every morning.
