Road station
Hispa
? Kangal ?
Hispa may be the Ispa of the geographer Ptolemy, and perhaps also Euspena, a stop on the road from Sebastia to Melitene in the Roman register of routes. If so, the map has moved it, together with its neighbour Arangas, onto the wrong road, a mix-up that happens elsewhere on the map where space is tight and roads crowd together. Euspena is placed at Kangal, where an Armenian church built from ancient stones could still be seen at the end of the 19th century. The next figure, eighteen miles, about twenty-seven kilometres, had to be run into the line of the Euphrates.
