Hermonassa
Fundstätte nahe Taman
Hermonassa, a Greek town near today's Taman, really lay on the Asian shore of the Strait of Kerch; but the long, narrow map squeezes the Black Sea so much that the cartographer moved it and its neighbours to the northern coast for lack of space. Ancient writers disagree about its origins. Arrian calls it a colony of Mytilene, named after the founder's wife, who took over the government after his death; others name a certain Hermon as founder, or speak of an Ionian colony. The early Greek geographer Hecataeus already knew it, and several authors place it on an island.
