Hermoca

Hermonasa

Hermoca is a form found nowhere else, and probably a slip for Hermisium, a town that the Roman writers Mela and Pliny place on the Cimmerian Bosporus. Written in Greek, the name contained a sigma shaped like a C, and a copyist carried it over as a Latin C instead of an s. The Ravenna list, with Ermogan and Ergoga, shows that the error already stood in the older map from which both drew, which was evidently hard to read here. The town lay between Myrmekion and Panticapaeum, perhaps even as its suburb, on the Strait of Kerch, which the map has accidentally left out.
