Heracleon

Çaltı Burnu, nahe der Mündung des Terme Çay

Heracleon was a harbour with a sanctuary of Heracles on the headland of Çaltı Burnu, near the mouth of the Terme Çay, and it was also called Lamyron. Its rise can be traced in the sources: Strabo and Ptolemy know only the cape, Arrian an anchorage for ships, and an anonymous guide of early Byzantine times a great harbour with drinking water for a fleet. The map leaves out the nearby river Thermodon, at whose mouth stood Themiscyra, where legend placed the Amazons.
