Pytane

Fatsa

Pytane is a mangled Phidasane, the fortified harbour that Arrian calls Phadisane, at Fatsa on the Black Sea coast. Its short form, Phadissa, passed through the medieval sea charts as Fatiza and Fadissa and survives in the town's modern name. It is often equated with Phabda, which Strabo lists among the strongholds on the coast of the fertile Sidene plain; one suggestion puts that fort on a twin-peaked cliff near Fatsa, where excavations since 2012 have found remains reaching back to the age of Mithridates the Sixth. The twenty miles the map gives on to Polemonio are far too many.
