Pylae
Yalova
Pylae, the gates, earned its name as a doorway to Constantinople: travellers to and from the capital passed through this harbour at Yalova on the Sea of Marmara. The map makes the point by setting it right opposite the picture of Constantinople, with the road running straight towards it, though that is not how the coast really lies. The map is in fact the first source to name the place; Greek writers mention it only from the 5th century. In 469 the future emperor Zeno, having barely escaped an attempt on his life, fled this way to Chalcedon. The figure for the road on to Cio is missing.
