Putea Pallene

on Slob el-Gharbi (Bahiret el-Biban), perhaps Hassi Sebbura? (Barrington)

Putea Pallene, the wells of Pallene, was a station on the road from Sabratha to Tacape, today's Gabes, inside the Tripolitanian frontier zone and not far from the island of Djerba. The geographer Ptolemy knew a Putea near the Pallas marsh. The exact site is uncertain: one suggestion places it by the Bahiret el-Biban, perhaps at Hassi Sebbura, while older research looked near Zarzis. Bishops are recorded here in 411 and 484, and an inscription calls the town a colonia, a Roman colony.
